The Ehu Kai Series (meaning ‘sea foam’ in Hawaiian) was inspired by a stormy winter beach walk on the north shore of O’ahu.

One-of-a kind, handwoven wire sculptures.

Influenced by the beauty and elegance of traditional Māori eel traps (hīnaki) Hīnaki Aroha aspires to be a modern object reflecting the creative forces behind the unison of nature and people.

Hīnaki Aroha is 168cm high and has been lit with custom lighting and steel fixtures by renowned New Zealand lighting engineer James Russ.

Pua Laha Ole, a one-of-a-kind, handwoven sculpture, translates from Hawaiian to mean 'highly-prized rare blossom'.

08. KAI NUI

Kai Nui (High Tide or Big Sea in Hawaiian) is a response to the artist's daily observations from her window watching ocean tides under the gravitational influence of the moon'.

One-of-a kind, handwoven wire sculpture.

Ka Wewela (meaning ‘The Intense Heat’ in Hawaiian) represents warmth and power radiating out from the sun.

Ao is one of the many names Māori have relating to clouds and cloud formations and was inspired by a single moment observed in the ever-changing sky over the Auckland isthmus.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Cherise Thomson is a sculptor and jewelry designer, currently residing on Auckland’s West Coast. Raised in Hawai’i and New Zealand, Cherise creates strong, organic forms inspired by her homeland’s natural beauty. The sculptural works on display are all handwoven from copper and galvanised wire. The unique sculpted lights are finished in collaboration with renowned New Zealand renowned New Zealand lighting engineer James Russ.
